Biography

Hussla is a DJ producer and vocalist hailing from the UK. He established his name as a DJ/Selector from the tender age of 12 when he co-founded Jah Troopers Sound in 1998 alongside his peers. As youths in the business during the early years, they were shunned and underestimated by the elder sound systems and promoters being used to play the early sets when the dance was empty and received very little pay or even no pay at times with the famous phrase from promoters “bwyyy…wi never mek nuh money tonight”.

These experiences instilled in Hussla resilience and a drive to prove his ability to stand up alongside the top of the top sounds and hold his own. Being in a considerably lower earning bracket than his competitors taught him to be creative and selective in what music to buy and how to play it, competing against expensive dubplates with regular 45s.

Through sheer dedication and talent, Hussla propelled Jah Troopers to the big leagues. Their impressive portfolio includes supporting an extensive list of international acts spanning Reggae, Hip Hop, and RnB genres. They have graced the airwaves of esteemed radio stations like BBC 1xtra and captivated audiences across Europe and Africa with their electrifying performances.

Setting new standards in event hosting, Jah Troopers influenced the quality of bookings they received and eliminated the need to compromise on performance conditions. This influential position created a platform for other aspiring artists and musicians. Facilitating this process played a significant role in Hussla developing his artistry, music production and reputable status in artist development across music genres such as Garage, DrumNbass, Grime and Hip Hop.

Hussla’s debut production, ‘The A-Block Mixtape,’ showcased local talent from his area. This was followed by the ‘Troopers Show – Track Sampler,’ a collaborative release with the UK rave brand Sidewinder Raw.

In 2011, Hussla dropped his mixtape titled “Fistful of Dandymite,” which predominantly featured his vocals alongside guest artists. The mixtape exhibited his Reggae influences across a diverse range of genres, including Hip Hop, RnB, Grime, and EDM.

Continuing his musical journey, Hussla released his first official digital release, ‘For My Brother,’ in tribute to his late brother ‘DJ Spess’, who was also an integral member of Jah Troopers as a specialist UK Garage & DrumNBass DJ. This heartfelt song, produced by ‘Rohan Newman’ (founder of How To Play Reggae and lead guitarist in Hussla’s band), featured guest vocals from female singer and friend ‘Shniece Mcmenamin.’

In 2015, Hussla revisited his roots in reggae with the ‘Ignite EP,’ which led to a UK tour with his band, headlining shows at renowned live music venues such as Brixton Hootananny.

However, it was the release of ‘Skanking In The Dancehall‘ in 2018 that propelled Hussla’s profile as a producer and artist to new heights. Collaborating with the legendary producer King Jammy, the song garnered international acclaim and found its way into prestigious publications like Complex (UK/US), Reggaeville (Germany), Reggae Vibes (France) (printed magazine with track sampler CD compilation), and ReggaeRadioIT (Italy). The track received airplay on numerous radio stations worldwide, reached the Top 25 Dancehall Charts in Australia, and secured spots on popular playlists like Apple Music‘s ‘Reggae A-List’ and Spotify‘s ‘Dancehall Kings.’ This collaboration also forged a lasting musical relationship between Hussla and King Jammy, welcoming Hussla into the Jammys family.

Since then, Hussla has released a series of compelling singles as a producer and vocalist. Collaborating with artists such as JR Kenna (Holland), Maikal X (Netherlands), Zebbylion (UK) and DJ Jeren.
